A new lawsuit in Cook County alleges that Travelers Insurance Company has misled plaintiffs in car accident cases for the past 25 years about the insurance policy limits of drivers. The suit, Sabrina Roppo v. Travelers Insurance, 2013-CH-16468, alleges that Travelers lied about coverage limits and that as a result plaintiffs settled their cases for less money. The suit seeks class action status.
Sabrina Roppo broke multiple bones in her foot in a car accident. She then filed suit against the other driver who was insured by Travelers. According to the suit, a Travelers representative stated under oath that the policy limits were $500,000, even though the driver also had a $1 million excess liability policy. Roppo alleges that she suffered financial consequences as a result of the alleged concealment.
Similar cases are pending against other insurance companies, including Penny v. State Farm, 2012-L-5053.
